Amid reports, the White House is preparing for an executive order to eliminate the Ministry of Education, and many ask what this might mean for the United States and schools.
Two sources familiar with the plans confirmed this step NBC News, but President Donald Trump cannot cancel a unilateral federal agency without the approval of Congress.
Here is a look at the section and what can be in the store:
What does the Ministry of Education do?
According to its website, “the mission of the Ministry of Education is to enhance students' achievement and prepare them for global competitiveness by enhancing educational excellence and ensuring equal access to students of all ages.”
Among other things, the administration calls for awareness of the challenges facing all over the country in the field of education, while also leading “programs that cover every field of education and range from pre -school education through post -doctoral research.”
One of the department jobs includes student loans.
What did Trump said?
Trump carried a promise to close the education department, which he says was hacked by “extremists, fanatics and Marxists”. He said that the agency's authority should be delivered to the states and schools.
Trump said that he nominated the former executive director of wrestling, Linda McMahon, to be his Minister of Education, despite his call to eliminate the Ministry of Education because he wanted her “to put herself from a job.”
“I told Linda, Linda, I hope you do a great job and put yourself out of the job.” “I want her to put herself from a job,” Trump told reporters.
The president said he wanted to leave school management work to the states. This does not mean that Trump wants Washington from the classroom. It is still suggested, among other maneuvers, using federal financing as a lever to pressure the K-12 school systems to cancel possession and adopt merit salaries for teachers and scrap diversity programs at all levels of education.
He called for the withdrawal of federal funding “for any school or program that pays critical race theory, gender ideology, or other racist, sexual or political content that is not appropriate for our children.”
However, a team from the Ministry of Governmental efficiency, which Illon Musk calls in management offices this week. A spokesman for the Ministry of Education confirmed that a team was on the site on Monday, but did not provide details about the nature of his work. Musk's colleagues have already sought the US Agency for International Development and access to sensitive payment systems in the Treasury.
Dozens of employees in the Ministry of Education were placed on a paid administrative leave in response to Trump's order, which prohibits diversity, shares and integration programs in the federal government, according to a labor union representing hundreds of workers in the agency.
Trump also suggested assuming colleges dependence, a step he described as his “secret weapon” against “Marxist crazy and madness” says he controls higher education.
Can Trump closing the education department?
It is possible to relax from the Congress administration to act.
In nearly five decades since the agency's establishment, the governors have made accidental attempts to close it, as critics said they were waste taxpayers money and the inclusion of the federal government in local education decisions.
Trump is expected to give his education leader a final date to make a plan for the Agency's landing virus. However, even some of his allies are wondering to what extent can go without Congress.
Some of the most important management programs are required through federal legislation, including the funds of the first address for low -income schools and federal student loans.
This was a source of frustration during the first period of Trump in his position, when his president has repeatedly sought budget discounts, but instead he witnessed that Congress increased the agency spending every year.
What's more, Trump's endeavor to close the section may be complicated according to his agenda. Indeed, he created a new work for the department, including plans to enhance “national” education and efforts to pursue schools that study controversial lessons in race and sex. The agency also opened new investigations in colleges, after Trump ordered a campaign to hostile to the campus.
Other testing from Congress will provide a Trump's effect. Some Republicans raised doubts about the popularity of closing the section or reducing its programs, which support both Republican and democratic countries.
The House of Representatives looked at amending a draft law to close the agency in 2023, but 60 Republicans joined the Democrats in opposing this. Last week, Representative Thomas Massi, R-Kentucky, presented legislation again to close the agency. The one -one proposal said that the Ministry of Education “ends on December 31, 2026.”
Details are expected to be resolved by Trump's education chief, and the president has not immediately said whether he would look forward to maintaining the primary work of the administration.
One of the potential models in Project 2025, a scheme for the second separation of Trump created by the Conservative Heritage Foundation. The proposal calls for many department's programs to other agencies.
According to the project plan 2025, the first address funding, the largest source of federal funds for public schools, will be transferred to the Ministry of Health and Humanitarian Services, and grant them grants to the states they spend, with the absence of attached chains. The Office of the Ministry of Education is transferred to the Ministry of Justice.
Trump asked the distance from Project 2025, although he hired some of the employees behind him, and in some cases, there is a great overlap with his own platform.
What can mean to you?
Federal financing is a small part of public school budgets-about 14 %-but it adds targeted support to low-income schools and private education, among other grant programs.
In Minnesota, Democrats at the State Association warned of the potential impact of Trump's order on Tuesday. Senator Mary Kunche said she was concerned that the matter may disrupt funding and called for more clarity in the plan.
“Imagine if we had billions of dollars at the federal level. How will we be sure they have the curriculum that they must learn?” Konich told a news conference.
Trump's plan can hold a McMahon confirmation session, a billionaire professional wrestler and Trump ally for a long time. Some consultants asked the White House to keep the request calm to avoid thorny questions, while others are pushing for its signature after confirming it. The date for the Senate session has not yet been set.
Even if the Ministry of Education is no longer present, the students ’debts will remain due.
Michelle Shipbard Zambini, director of the ability to afford the college at the institute of access to the college and success, said that new and current students who depend on the college's financial aid may be delayed, even if the Ministry of Education is only partially closed.
