WASHINGTON, June 27, 2024 – As of June 1, there were 74.5 million hogs and sows on U.S. farms, up 1% from June 2023 and up slightly from March 1, 2024, according to the Quarterly Hogs and Pigs Report released today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
Key Findings from the Report
Overall Inventory
Of the 74.5 million pigs and sows, 68.5 million were for marketing, while 6.01 million were held for breeding. This demonstrates a continued growth in both sectors of the swine industry.
Weaning Statistics
Between March and May 2024, 34.0 million pigs were weaned on U.S. farms, up 2% from the same period the previous year. Additionally, U.S. hog and sow producers weaned an average of 11.56 pigs per litter during this time.
Future Projections
U.S. hog producers plan to have 2.96 million sows farrowing between June and August 2024, and 2.94 million sows farrowing between September and November 2024, indicating steady production levels.
State Inventories
- Iowa hog producers had the largest state inventory, at 24.6 million head.
- Minnesota had the second-largest inventory, at 9.20 million head.
- North Carolina came in third with 7.60 million head.
Data Collection
To get an accurate measure of the U.S. hog industry, NASS surveyed 4,524 operators nationwide during the first half of June. Data was collected online through NASS’s Respondent Portal, by mail, by phone, and through in-person interviews.
