The City of Chicago releases homicide information daily. The release of homicide victim names is delayed for two weeks to allow the victim's family to notify Chicago Police of the victim's death.
Homicide figures do not include killings in self-defense or under circumstances other than those measured in Chicago police statistics. Homicide data from the Illinois State Police, which patrols the city's highways, is also not included here.
After a two-year spike during the pandemic and national outcry over police accountability, Chicago began to see a decline in homicides in 2022. Total homicides and nonfatal shootings fell again in 2023, but the city was roiled by burglary and carjacking crews responsible for an overall spike in violence.
