The United States welcomes today's signing of a $480 million Millennium Challenge Corporation grant to the Government of Sierra Leone to enhance access to electricity, promote sustainable economic growth, and improve the quality of life of its citizens. This grant, along with a voluntary contribution of $14.2 million from the Government of Sierra Leone, will finance transformative investments in the energy sector to provide reliable and affordable electricity to 4.6 million people.
The grant will significantly improve the operation of the electrical grid and increase the availability of affordable and reliable electricity to households, businesses and social enterprises – without increasing the country's debt burden. MCC's partnership with the Government of Sierra Leone will help unlock the country's economic potential, empower communities and businesses, and create more prosperous and prosperous Sierra Leonean citizens.
As we work together to implement this transformative agenda, the United States welcomes Sierra Leone's continued commitment to democratic principles, including progress in implementing the National Unity Agreement, in electoral and constitutional reform, and in seeking justice and accountability for electoral violence.
