In a virtual event linking London and Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced that Birx, an insurance technology company focused on affordable luxury benefits, has chosen Chicago for its US headquarters. This decision confirms the city's growing role as a center for innovative businesses.
The ad featured Mayor Johnson and Pirkx founder and CEO Stella Smith, along with representatives from World Business Chicago and local small business owners, who gathered at the Quad Cities Development Corporation in Bronzeville. As a gesture to support local businesses, Pirkx offered free memberships to 10 participating businesses, demonstrating its commitment to empowering small enterprises.
Pirkx addresses a critical gap in the market, where 90% of the world's 3.2 billion workers lack access to basic workplace wellness benefits. The company's platform offers more than 40 benefits, including on-demand medical services, mental health support, financial tools, and skills training, all through a flexible, self-service technology platform.
“Chicago is a destination of choice for forward-thinking companies like Pirkx,” said Mayor Johnson. “Their establishment here speaks volumes about our city’s role as a global business hub, especially in addressing the pressing issue of mental health within our business community.”
Founded in January 2019, Pirkx aims to provide freelancers, contractors, and small business employees with a comprehensive suite of health benefits. Backed by prominent investors and initiatives, Smith has ambitious plans to expand Pirkx’s impact globally, and has already launched in Australia.
“The opportunity is huge,” Smith said. “Millions of self-employed and gig workers lack access to crucial welfare benefits. We aim to revolutionize access to the global workforce, and Chicago is the perfect city to launch this next phase of our growth.
The announcement was part of a strategic business development journey led by Mayor Johnson and World Business Chicago, focused on strengthening global relationships and enhancing economic growth opportunities for Chicago.
