As delegates and attendees gather for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the anticipation is palpable in our city. Beyond the political spectacle and national spotlight, the Democratic National Convention presents a great opportunity for our local community, especially Black and Brown small businesses, to thrive.
The influx of visitors and delegates will inject a wave of activity into our local economy. From restaurants and catering services to transportation services and event venues, small businesses across Cook County will benefit from the increased demand. This economic boost provides underserved communities, which often face systemic barriers such as lack of access to capital and fewer networking opportunities, with visibility on the national stage. New visitors drawn to these communities through the Democratic National Convention can provide these communities with the tools they need to continue to address these barriers to access, foster local economic growth, and contribute to broader community development.
Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, each with its own unique charm and cultural fabric waiting to be explored. By venturing beyond the Loop and exploring neighborhoods like Bronzeville, Hyde Park, and Southshore, visitors can enrich their experience by discovering Chicago’s diverse cultures, enjoying local cuisine, immersing themselves in our city’s arts and architecture, and supporting local businesses.
For example, Bronzeville was a center of African American culture during the Great Migration, home to figures such as Louis Armstrong and Gwynne Dolin Brooks, and places like the Du Sable Museum of African American History allow visitors to connect with Chicago’s rich heritage.
As we come together to welcome delegates, media and visitors from across the country, let’s showcase the best of our city: our hospitality, our diversity and our resilience. This event is not just about logistics and political outcomes; it is an opportunity to show how a diverse community can come together and celebrate common goals.
In these times of division, both within our city and across the country, unity is critical. By hosting the Democratic National Convention this August, Chicago has an opportunity to bridge divides, build understanding, and strengthen the bonds that define us as Chicagoans and Americans alike.
Let’s go beyond convention centers and hotels. Embrace Chicago’s spirit of exploration and discovery. Whether you have a spare afternoon or a full day, venture into the neighborhoods that make our city thrive.
Step outside the Loop and into the heart of Chicago. Your experience will be richer, your memories deeper, and your understanding of our city more complete.
