The U.S. Department of State today announced the new, fully online passport renewal system is now available to the public, an important step toward ensuring Americans have easier access to passport services. Instead of printing out a paper application and mailing it in with a check, Americans can now renew their passports through a secure process that saves time and effort.
Our online passport renewal system is an important example of how the Department is modernizing government services for the benefit of Americans and implementing President Biden’s Executive Order, “Transforming the Federal Customer Experience and Service Delivery to Rebuild Trust in Government.” By offering this online alternative to the traditional paper application process, the Department is embracing digital transformation to provide the most efficient and convenient passport renewal experience possible. Thanks to increased staffing, technological advances, and a host of other improvements, the average routine passport is processed today in about one-third the time it was at the same point last summer, and well below the reported processing times of six to eight weeks.
We continue to look for ways to reduce administrative barriers and improve efficiency, equity, and accessibility throughout the passport application process. We are committed to ensuring that the American public has seamless access to passport services and to making our new online process the best possible tool. We encourage Americans to apply.
