A man was shot and killed inside a Woodlawn home Monday night after his cousin's friend “agitated” his rivals, sparking a hail of gunfire, according to Chicago police.
The 55-year-old man was sitting on a couch watching TV in the 6600 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue around 8 p.m. when his cousin's friend started arguing with someone in front of the house, according to police reports obtained by the Sun-Times.
The man then heard more than 20 gunshots, one of which went through a front window and struck him in the neck, killing him, according to reports. No one else was hit by the bullets.
According to reports, her boyfriend – who had been “teasing” her rivals over the phone on Sunday – began provoking them again on Monday, urging them to “go” home, which they did, leading to the fatal attack.
The man, who has not yet been identified, was shot in the chest and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he later died.
The suspects fled the scene, and no one has been arrested.
The street where the shooting occurred was quiet Tuesday morning, with rain falling. The crime scene had been cleaned up, and there was no tape or other evidence left to indicate the existence of the investigation, but the front window of the house was broken, with what appeared to be a bullet hole through the top.
Steven Jackson, who lives in the area, said he knew the 55-year-old man from school and heard the shooting. He said he later saw bullet casings in the street.
Another home in the area was broken into last week, police said. At least one of the suspects opened fire before entering the home, where two girls were inside. The suspects took unspecified items and left. No injuries were reported.
In light of the violence, Jackson said he and his neighbors were on edge, and he was concerned about safety, especially after Monday's deadly attack.
“It’s lucky the children weren’t here, they would have been beaten,” he said. “What can we do to provide some security here?”
