On behalf of the United States, I congratulate the people of Hungary on your celebration of St. Stephen's Day, which marks more than a thousand years of your country's rich history.
Twenty-five years ago, Hungary joined the most successful defense alliance in world history. Hungary welcomed NATO because of its commitment to a democratic future. That commitment, like the deep bonds between our peoples, must be protected and should form the foundation of Hungary-U.S. relations.
On this solemn day, I hope we can work toward a closer relationship between the United States and Hungary, rooted in democratic values, shared security, and prosperity. This is what the deep friendship between our peoples and the rich history between our countries deserve.
