A Tragic Holiday Weekend
More than 100 people were shot, including 19 who were killed, during the Fourth of July long weekend in Chicago. The violence marked a grim escalation from last year’s holiday weekend, which saw 11 people killed and 62 wounded. This year’s total shootings had already surpassed last year’s numbers by Friday evening.
Addressing the Violence
Police Superintendent Larry Snelling will join Mayor Brandon Johnson at 9 a.m. to address the shootings during a meeting at Public Safety Headquarters, 3510 S. Michigan Ave. “We are devastated by the recent violence that has left our city in grief, and we offer our heartfelt condolences to the families and communities affected by these recent events,” Mayor Johnson’s office stated earlier.
Fatal Attacks
The weekend’s fatal attacks included numerous tragic incidents:
- Sunday, 11:50 p.m.: Two teens, ages 18 and 16, were shot in the 700 block of East 89th Place. The 18-year-old died at the University of Chicago.
- Sunday, 11:30 p.m.: Melvin Hill, 36, was found shot in the head in the 200 block of North Central Avenue and died at the scene.
- Saturday, 11:55 p.m.: A 25-year-old driver was found unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds after crashing into an overpass in the 5800 block of South Elizabeth Street and died at the scene.
- Saturday, 11:15 p.m.: A man and woman were shot while walking on the sidewalk in the 100 block of East 21st Street. The man died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
- Saturday, 10:35 p.m.: A 47-year-old man was shot while driving in the 10600 block of South State Street and later died at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
- Saturday, 8:50 p.m.: A man was shot multiple times near the 1700 block of East 71st Street and was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
- Friday, 2:10 a.m.: Demetrius Dorn, 43, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the 1200 block of West Washburn Avenue and died at Stroger Hospital.
- Friday, 7 a.m.: A man and woman were found shot and killed in the 3400 block of East 87th Street.
- Friday, 2 a.m.: Leontre Taylor, 30, was shot and killed in the 700 block of South Cicero Street in Austin.
- Friday, 1 a.m.: Kendall Richardson, 40, was killed and six others wounded in a shooting in the 100 block of South Menard Street.
- Thursday, 11:50 p.m.: Two women, ages 59 and 29, were shot in the 900 block of North LeClair Street. The older woman died at Stroger Hospital.
- Thursday, 11:50 p.m.: A 35-year-old man was shot multiple times in the 6000 block of South Winchester Street and died at St. Bernard Hospital.
- Thursday, 11 p.m.: A 30-year-old man was shot in the torso in the 8400 block of South Kerfoot Avenue and died at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
- Thursday, 2:10 p.m.: A 24-year-old man was found shot to death in the 9300 block of South Lafayette Street.
- Thursday, 6:15 a.m.: An 8-year-old boy and two women were killed, and two young boys were critically injured in a shooting in the 7100 block of South Woodlawn Avenue.
- Thursday, 1 a.m.: Dion Butler, 34, was shot in the neck in the 6200 block of South Laughlin Avenue and died at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Non-Fatal Shootings
The non-fatal shootings included:
- Friday, 12:15 a.m.: Eight people were wounded in a shooting in the 1300 block of West Hastings Street.
- Friday, 1:40 a.m.: A 16-year-old girl was shot in the head and critically wounded in the 1200 block of South Central Park Avenue.
- Saturday, 2 a.m.: Another 16-year-old girl was shot in the leg in the 3500 block of South California Avenue.
- Saturday evening: A 15-year-old boy was critically shot in the 100 block of North La Verne Street.
- Sunday morning: A white van approached a group in the 3700 block of South State Street, resulting in four people being injured.
In addition to the aforementioned victims, 60 others were shot between 11 p.m. Wednesday and 5 a.m. Monday.
