City Downtown – Mayor Brandon Johnson and Chicago Police Department Supp. Larry Senelj describes a decrease in a violent crime this year in Chicago, a transformation that comes at a time when cities across the country have witnessed a decrease in murders and other crimes since the rise after the guardianship.
It is surrounded by colleagues of the mayor and police chiefs on Monday morning at a meeting at the Chicago Conference of the American mayor's conference who focused on public safety, Johnson and Snelling on a large scale that the city and administration initiatives – such as the theft work squad that was presented last year – contributed to reporting fewer crimes in most groups until 2025.
He asked a policy naming correspondent that was believed to have contributed to a decrease in violent crime, Johnson on Monday did not include specific initiatives or programs. The mayor had previously indicated an increase in employing young people and expanding mental health resources under his management as an integral part of his approach to public safety.
Johnson said: “What we face in Chicago, which I think is something that all mayors spoke about, and you have to create the opportunity and accountability,” Johnson said. “Everyone agrees that we will not go to the police of our way to safety, and we must make sure that we are building affordable homes, providing opportunities for young people, and ensuring that there are support services for behavioral and mental health, and this includes the first respondents, but it also requires us to obtain partnerships within our societies.”
Compared to last year, murders and shooting crimes decreased by 25 percent and 31 percent, respectively, from the beginning of 2025 to April 20, according to police data. The battery theft and car theft also decreased on an annual basis.
It is worth noting that Chicago reported about 1,000 robbery so far in 2025 compared to 2024, according to police data that were published until April 20.
This sharp decline comes after the rise in the birth of armed robberies in the year 2023 and 2024, including West Town, Logan Square and other northern western side societies.
Last April, robbery increased by almost 30 percent at the city level since 2021, when some police areas have witnessed an partially increased dramatic increase in theft crews attacking many victims in successive accidents.
Until April 21, 2024, Chicago reported 2,695 robbery at the city level, which even with the same period was in 2023.
But this year, Chicago witnessed a total of 1675 robberies until April 20, the police data appears. The first three months of 2025 have witnessed the lowest number of robbery in that same period over the past 25 years, according to the recent WBEZ data analysis.
Snelling said on Monday that the recent decline is partially attributed to the work of the theft work band, which publishes “focus tasks” throughout the city. He said that a group of dedicated officers managed to rely on the additional “air support” of helicopters during chases, including three new helicopters gained by the administration last year.
He said: “It has caused a big effect. We use them in the best possible way to make sure that when someone commits a robbery and kidnapping vehicles, we call for air support.” “The officers do so all the time. They are following the car from the air. Our officers arrive at the site and they are able to arrests under these circumstances.”
While robbery at the city level, some Sprees are still taking place in certain areas.
On Monday, the police department warned the neighbors of a series of robbery, robbery and sexual assaults associated with the same man since December in West Ridge.
In the winter, the police said the theft crew attacked more than 20 people in separate incidents over a month for a month in West Town, Buckown and Logan Square. A 16 -year -old child has been charged with many of these crimes.
Police said the robberies also witnessed a 20 percent decrease at the city level this year until April 20, although some areas – such as the Morgan Police area (22) on the southern south side and the Lincoln Police area (20) on the northern side – witnessed an increase.
Last year, many companies spoke to Block Club about facing repeated robberies as part of a dramatic increase on the northern side.
Town Hall Police data (19), which includes Lincoln Park, Likvio, Regleville and parts of Lincoln Square, showed 634 robbery until December 1, 2024 – which are most of any of the 22 police area in the city at that stage of the year, the city data appears.
So far in 2025, robbery in the Town Hall has decreased by 21 percent compared to the same period last year. But it is still 60 percent higher than reported in 2021, as police statements appear.
“Every area of working with those companies must make sure that we maintain this area, and this is what our provincial leaders are doing now,” Snelling said on Monday. “We'll actually get more things around a bicycle bike to help keep these things.”
Johnson and Snelling received several questions on Monday about the latest proposal surrounding the curfew in Chicago in Chicago, in response to the continuous “adolescent acquisition” in the city center and other places.
The settlement version of the proposed -backed decree from Ald. Brian Hopkins (the second), who is now transmitted through the city council, will give the power to announce the “circumstantial curfew” at any time, anywhere throughout the city. The curfew in the current Chicago begins at 10 pm for anyone or less.
Johnson has always been skeptical of adjusting the curfew, and the two will not say whether he would lead to Hopkins law if it was passed – although he necessitated the measure “a step in the right direction” earlier this month.
Snelling will also say explicitly whether the modified proposal may be a useful tool for its officers.
“This depends. Once we see the final product, it may be,” he said. “I don't want to give you a tangible answer now, so that we have a final product.”
