CHICAGO (CBS) — The holiday shopping season is in full swing, and shoppers are encouraged to shop local on Small Business Saturday.
Neighborhoods, including Humboldt Park, Lincoln Square and Ravenswood, are offering additional promotions and special events in honor of Shopping Day.
Lincoln Square and Ravenswood will have Victorian-style carolers, and Santa will be on hand for photos. Later in the day, a tree lighting ceremony will also be held. The event starts at 11am
In West Pullman, at least nine small Black-owned businesses from around the area will host free holiday photo ops, cookies and hot chocolate, some festive craft projects, and a winter coat drive for anyone who wants to drop off donations. They will be taking coats to those in need during Christmas Eve.
The Bronzeville neighborhood encourages people to shop local, as does Rogers Park. They're going all out with their tree lighting and 3D snow globe photo wall.
Community leaders and Mayor Brandon Johnson spoke inside a Humboldt Park café, kicking off a day of local holiday shopping.
“Our small businesses make up what I call the Chicago spirit,” Johnson said. “This is where the community comes together, this is where the community thrives, and that's why I've pledged to continue investing in small businesses.
The store owner at Café Colao in Humboldt Park said Saturdays are generally busy, but they expect to see an increase in Small Business Saturday sales, something most businesses also expect during the busy holiday shopping season.
