At least 41 people have been shot dead, nine of them fatally, since Friday evening. One of the shootings resulted in the death of a 5-year-old girl.
The mother of a 5-year-old girl who was shot and killed on the Near West Side is demanding justice
The mother of 5-year-old Rain Weir says she's taking things one day at a time.
When she spoke with ABC7 by phone Monday, she described her daughter as lively and lovable.
Ren's family shared a photo of the little girl who was tragically shot and killed on the Near West Side on Sunday.
Wren's mother, Raven Adams, is still processing what happened. She told ABC7 she's trying to stay strong while grieving the loss of her daughter.
Raven said Ren will be remembered as a playful little girl, fascinated by bubbles, who loved playing with her older sister and watching dance videos on social media.
Ren was sitting inside a parked car, and her father was standing outside when they were shot early Sunday morning. Chicago police said the shooting happened on South Campbell near Jackson just after 3:30 a.m
Ren later died after being taken to hospital. Her 24-year-old father, ABC7 last heard, was in good condition.
A witness told ABC7 that a group of men jumped out of a car and opened fire on a group of people standing outside in what appeared to be an ambush attack.
Police said they are still investigating the motive behind this shooting. So far, no one is in custody.
Meanwhile, police are searching for a motive. A GoFundMe for the child's family can be found here.

Johnson's summer safety plan was put to the test
Despite the rise in shooting numbers, calls to stop gun violence in the city appear to have had an impact.
The number of violence that occurred over the weekend so far is lower than last year's numbers, when 53 people were shot, 11 of whom were killed.
The long weekend puts Mayor Brandon Johnson's summer safety plan to the test.
He spoke during a community rally over the weekend, criticizing previous administrations for what he described as a lack of investment in the city and its youth.
“They destroyed this city, but now you have progressive leadership that has invested in the people to build it,” Johnson said.
At least 45 people were shot last weekend, one fatally, in gun violence across Chicago, police said.
