It takes more than a near-death experience to put Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) out of commission.
As Chicago PD season 12 picks up a month after the events of the season 11 finale, “Voight is back at work full-time, physically recovered from his injuries and putting his all into the work,” executive producer Gwen Segan tells Entertainment Weekly.
But that doesn’t mean he’s mentally recovered from the experience of losing Hayley Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) and nearly losing his life. “Voight is definitely in a weird mental state,” says Segan. “He’s trying to get back to a baseline, but that baseline for him has changed. Voight is in a place where he’s more reflective than we’ve seen him in a while — his loneliness has changed, he’s changed, and whether he’s consciously aware of it or not, when we meet him at the beginning of the season, he’s taking stock of his life.”

As for the vacancy in the intelligence unit left by Upton’s departure, Segan says they will fill it, and hopefully do so “in a way that feels unexpected and fun for the audience.” She adds: “It’s given us a great opportunity to cast some great guest stars and see the new police dynamics within the unit.”
“All the chemistry that’s been formed over our seasons is there, of course, but any time you add some new characters, you have the opportunity to form closer bonds, new connections, and discoveries about new characters and pasts that we haven’t learned about yet,” Segan continues. “I really liked the idea of surprising our characters this year (and) changing things up a little bit for them in a good way.”
One of the team's main links is Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick Pflueger), a couple whose love story has been going on for years (and years). But last season, the couple decided to get engaged… again. So, will we finally get a Burgess-style wedding?
“It’s the plan now,” says Sejan. “Burgess and Ruzek have been through a lot for their relationship, and they’ve found some happiness. I think they’re in a strong, stable place as a couple — where they can face challenges as a team — so a wedding is definitely in their plans.”
We just hope these plans don't change.
