The crime happened around 6:30 a.m. in the 5100 block of South Rutherford Street in the city's Garfield Ridge neighborhood.
A 41-year-old woman was walking to her car when a female suspect stabbed her and stole her Nissan Rogue, police said.
Neighbors told ABC7 that the victim is a teacher, and had just started her car to warm it up when the attack occurred.
The 41-year-old was stabbed in the chest and biceps; She was taken to hospital in critical condition.
The victim ran across the street for help and rang her neighbor's doorbell.
The neighbor did not want to appear on camera, but she told ABC7 that her doorbell camera captured most of the three-minute attack.
“You ring the doorbell and you just say, 'Call the police, I'm being robbed.' “Then I went to my neighbor, and through the camera, you can hear her screaming as she was being stabbed.”
Minutes after driving the Nissan, the suspect crashed into a parked car a few blocks away, in the 5100 block of South Mulligan Street.
A 30-year-old man heard the crash and approached the SUV to try to help, but the suspect also stabbed him.
He was stabbed in the back. He was taken to hospital and is expected to be fine.
Eyewitnesses said that he was a father taking his two-year-old daughter to nursery.
One witness said: “She jumped out of the car and chased him. I think she was also trying to take his car, while he was trying to put his child in the car and go to work.”
The man and his neighbor who called 911 detained the attacker until police could get there.
The man's child was not injured.
The suspect was arrested at the scene and taken to the hospital with minor injuries as a result of the accident.
The neighborhood is on the edge of the abyss.
“She's a Chicago Public Schools teacher. She wasn't trying to hurt anyone. She was just warming up her car, getting ready to work. I'm glad I was there for her,” James Carr said.
Carr said he was not a hero because he came to help one of his neighbors.
He said he woke up to beatings and screaming.
“I ran to the front door, and the lady was being stabbed. So, I immediately opened the door, confronted the person, and pulled the lady into the house,” Carr said.
The investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending.
