Chicago (WLS) – There is great progress that is made in combating excessive doses of drugs and deaths throughout the country. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released initial data showing a 24 % decrease in the country in the deaths associated with Avions.
ABC7 I-Team spoke exclusively with the former Commissioner of the Ministry of Public Health at Chicago, Dr. Alison Arodi, who is now working with the Disease Control Center and reached the great steps taken during the past year in the opioid material epidemic.

While these numbers seem promising, Arodi said she hopes to contemplate the public health obligations made by President Donald Trump during his first term.
Arodi Chicago sponsored through the worst public health crisis in modern history during the Covid-19s. Now the injuries center at the Disease Control Center with the concentration of lasers on doses or aids death.
“This is a topic that we know that people care about, regardless of their policies, regardless of where they live,” said Arodi.
The Disease Control Center has released new temporary data showing a significant decrease in opioids from October 2023 to September 2024, or approximately 24 %, which equals about 27,000 lower deaths on an annual basis.
Arwady said these strong improvements are seen locally thanks to the financing of the Center for Disease Control and Chicago preachers for public health on the ground.
“I truly cut off my teeth in the Ministry of Public Health in Chicago in terms of the innovative work that we were doing in preventing the use of materials, until the return, as you know, nearly 10 years ago, I will tell you that both Illinois and Chicago see these themselves and good declines in terms of excessive death.”
She also explained that the national death data collected by the Disease Control Center with common trends for public health and law enforcement experts to continue to keep pace with advanced toxic drug cocktails.
“Every month I was in Chicago, we used to use this disease control center to consider many details about the place where excessive doses were exactly, and when excessive doses were occurring, how these patterns were changing.” “On the side of public safety, they use the same variable patterns that we see in humans to inform intelligence on how to work to intercept drug supply.”
However, defenders on the front lines say these improvements are barely visible in their customers.
John Werning is the CEO of Chicago Recovery Alliance, a group that provides clean needles and Narcan drug test ribbons and training the overdose for users in the city.
“We serve, as you know, traditionally, the most vulnerable population, and people with very little, as low social and economic societies, marginalized, and historically deprived societies, and we know that these people are the most likely to try an overdose, and so far, have remained the same societies.” “Yes, there is a reduction between 24 % to 25 %, but … we still have 86,000 people who die annually from an overdose, right? This is still a crisis, this is still an epidemic.”
As the severe cuts of employees and government services continue, both Arwady warns of the possibility of canceling the financing.
“It will be really worrying for me,” Arodi said. “We have seen now after I was at the Center for Disease Control all over the country, and we have to double what we know. This should not be the main cause of death. I don't even think it should be one of the main causes of death, but we have to keep pace with public health investments in public health emergencies.”
Arodi has also stressed the great progress in the I-Team team since President Trump announced the deaths related to the ovens with a public health crisis during his first term and hopes that this vital financing will continue.
